Rapid diagnostic testing
is one of the fastest growing applications of AgBio and eco-management.
Microbial tests originally developed in the 1960s and 1970s have
achieved increased rapidity and specificity through the combined use of
advanced techniques in genetic engineering, immunology, filtration,
microelectronics and computers. Many of these approaches initially
developed for environmental applications are now shifting to food
systems. These new tests can help scientists, farmers and food industry
workers identify the source of toxic substances in food quickly and
accurately. Several well-known toxins are E. Coli, Salmonella and
coliforms.

2. Water is an essential
component of farming, and efficient irrigation is essential in all dry
land farming. Bacteria in irrigation water, drinking water,
indoor air, food and household surfaces cannot be seen, tasted or even
smelled. Rapid tests can identify pathogenic microorganisms that cause
health problems such as gastrointestinal disorders, typhoid, cholera,
dysentery and hepatitis.
